The Secrets of Lake Road

Secrets will out, or does the truth really set you free? That is the premise behind Katchur’s The Secrets of Lake Road. The story covers two different generations of Lake Road summer residents, particularly Caroline and her mother Jo.
One generation has covered up and ignored the truth behind the drowning death of a teen; the other is just coming into her teen years as another drowning brings the past to the forefront of the community’s consciousness. And those who promote this Poconos’ recreation community just want everything to blow over so that life can return to normal (and money made) once again.
Jo has been hiding the truth about her role in the drowning death of her boyfriend Billy years before, and her daughter Caroline feels guilt over the drowning of seven-year-old Sara Starr since she was one of the last people to see her alive. These two drownings set in motion the events of this novel. Dredging the lake bottom to find Sara’s body brings up bones that disturb the tranquility of the community, and more important, those who are intimately connected to this earlier event.
For Caroline, she does everything she can to locate Sara, and in the process, uncovers the secrets that her mother has tried so long to hide. Moreover, this leads to disrupting family dynamics that will change everything for many of the families of Lake Road.
The past collides with the present as the story moves along to a heartbreaking conclusion that had this reader enthralled from the opening pages of this suspenseful book. This reader is looking forward to reading the author’s next work of fiction.
